Retired Nottinghamshire baker who lost five stone 'wouldn't be walking' without weight loss

A retired Nottinghamshire baker said he probably would not be able to walk if he had not lost five stone in two years. Colin White, 74, decided he had to shed the weight in 2017 after developing type 2 diabetes and COPD.

After being encouraged by wife Rita, who joined her husband to sign up to Slimming World, 5ft 8ins Mr White went on to drop from 19-and-a-half stone to 14-and-a-half stone.

"I wouldn't say it was even a diet, it just changed the way I ate. I eat a lot healthier now," he told Nottinghamshire Live. "If I was still that weight now I don't think I would be able to walk because of my knee. I think it would be impossible to walk about with that weight on top of it."

As a result of losing the weight, Mr White, of Nuthall, said he no longer has diabetes or COPD. "I was fat getting fat, I was fat and ugly in those days and I'm a lot skinnier now. I'm just ugly now. I needed new clothes and shoes. One thing you don't think about is that your feet get smaller, I've got shoes that are no good."

Mrs White, 70, joined Slimming World along with her husband of 51 years and lost two stone in the process, dropping to 12 stone nine pounds. "I suffered with aches and pains put I feel better now," she said.

"I wanted Colin to go but didn't think he would go on his own. He was getting a bit plump and he found it hard to get up the stairs. Now he doesn't take any tablets for diabetes and COPD, it was a shock for him not to have them any more."
