CHICAGO _ A 51-year-old woman and a retired Illinois State Police trooper are dead after the woman shot him and two other men, including an off-duty trooper and another retired trooper, before turning the gun on herself Friday night inside a cigar lounge in west suburban Lisle, authorities said.
Lisle police officers responded to a call of shots fired about 10:10 p.m. at The Humidor cigar lounge, 1600 Ogden Ave., and found four people shot who needed life-saving aid, according to acting police chief Ron Wilkes.
The 51-year-old woman had shot three men, who were patrons at the lounge, before dying with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. One of the men shot was also pronounced dead, Wilkes said.
The off-duty trooper is a 22-year veteran of the state police's Chicago district, according to a press release from the agency. The trooper, 48, is hospitalized is serious condition, but has stabilized, police said.
A 51-year-old retired officer died of his injuries, state police said, and a 55-year-old retired officer is stabilized at a hospital.
"The Illinois State Police family have heavy hearts this morning," ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly said in the release. "We are mourning the loss of a retired trooper, and praying for a full recovery of both our active and retired officers. Please keep all our officers and families in your prayers in the dark and painful moment."
The two surviving men were taken to Edward Hospital and Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Wilkes said.
"At this point we have no idea why this happened," Wilkes said. "We're interviewing a lot of witnesses and hope to get to the bottom of this."
Although the motive behind the attacks was currently unknown, Wilkes said there was no longer any danger to the community because the suspected shooter was dead.
