Retired doctor charged with killing neighbour John Birrell in Inverness

A retired ophthalmologist has appeared in private at Inverness Sheriff Court accused of killing his
neighbour.

Hamish Towler, 65, from Inverness, made no plea to a charge of the culpable homicide of John Birrell, 55, on Monday in the city.

He is accused of obstructing the car John was travelling in, refusing to allow it to pass, seizing John by the body, pulling him from the car, compressing his neck, striking him on the head with a dog lead, causing him to fall in a ditch and killing him.

Towler was committed for further examination and released on bail by Sheriff Gary Aitken.

John ran an MOT and service centre in Carsegate Road in Inverness.
