PHITSANULOK: A former border patrol policeman was seriously injured after suffering a gunshot wound to the head from a 9mm pistol in what appeared to be a suicide attempt, police said.
Pol Col Siripong Nguanthongchan, a duty officer at Nakhon Thai police station, said the incident occurred on Sunday morning at a house behind the Government Savings Bank, Nakhon Thai district branch.
Police and a rescue unit from a charity foundation found Pol Sr Sgnt Maj Boonrob Sangiamprong, 65, lying unconscious in a pool of blood. He was shot in the right ear. A 9mm pistol was found near him.
He was given first-aid treatment before being rushed to Phutthachinnarat Hospital in Muang district.
A police investigation revealed that since his retirement, Pol Sr Sgt Boonrob had lived alone in the house after separating from his wife. He was on record as having received treatment for mental illness at a hospital in Loei province.
Police were investigating. It was initially believed he tried to kill himself out of stress.
