RetailTrust and Silverburn owner launch financial aid for Covid-hit students

Students facing hardship due to Covid-19 are to be offered financial help through a bursary scheme run by trade charity retailTRUST and retail landlord Hammerson.

Students on fashion and retail-related courses at Glasgow Caledonian University will be able to apply for one-off grants after many lost part-time jobs due to the crisis. Many students also count on jobs in the retail sector to get by.

The retailTRUST and Hammerson, which owns Glasgow's Silverburn shopping centre and Union Square in Aberdeen, already provides seed funding and scholarships to young entrepreneurs at GCU.

Jillian Watt, director of the GCU Foundation, said: “The retailTRUST bursary scheme is very welcome in this extremely challenging climate, and we are grateful for this generous and valued support.”

Amy Prendergast, director of change, people and learning at retailTRUST, said: "We are proud to be part of this innovative partnership with GCU and Hammerson plc.

"At this time of crisis, we recognise that there will be more students than ever experiencing financial adversity, and through the provision of bursaries, our goal is to deliver assistance directly to where there is a need.”

James Rogers, community manager at Hammerson plc, added: “We are very aware of the difficulties students are facing at this time as a result of many factors, including lack of job opportunities. We are glad to help make a positive impact in such a challenging environment."
