Retailers across Ireland warn supply chain disruption is at 'crisis point' ahead of Christmas

According to new research, 89% of Irish online retailers are concerned about supply chain issues affecting them in the run-up to Christmas.

Their concern won’t come as a surprise as the headlines have recently been filled with warnings to consumers around the issues facing all types of retail this festive season.

The results, published by software provider Scurri, also show that 59% of retailers in Ireland think this Christmas will be much more challenging than last Christmas - particularly for online retailers.

Rory O’Connor, founder and CEO of Scurri, explained that the study looked at how supply chain complications are reaching a ‘crisis point' for some.

“Supply chain disruption is at a crisis point.

“HGV driver, CO2 shortages, inflated shipping costs and commodities prices, sustainability issues, financial strains and greater ESG regulations for sourcing and manufacturing goods are just some of the many challenges retailers are facing.”

Among the popular retailers that have published warnings around supply issues are the likes of Smyths, IKEA and Penneys.

Aside from supply chain problems, retailers are also struggling with getting people back to work post-Covid with almost nine out of 10 online retailers saying they are very concerned about labour shortages ahead of the notoriously busy Christmas season.

As a result of these complications in the last month, many Irish retailers are worried about the level of trade to and from Ireland in the coming months.
