Resurrection drama: Titian's Noli Me Tangere

Titian's Noli me Tangere, about 1514
Christ has been resurrected. In a garden he is spotted by Mary Magdalene, here shown wearing carnal red, according to tradition. But the human drama as Titian shows Christ bending away from her, like a bow, saying, ‘No one must touch me’, has the emotional depth of a scene in Shakespeare. The haunting landscape with its blue and gold horizon and countrified hamlet adds to the mystery of the moment. The awestruck Magdalene is portrayed with intimate feeling, her shock so visible Illustration: The National Gallery, London
