Restrictions remain in place for non-elite sport in Northern Ireland

Justice Minister Naomi Long says restrictions will remain in place for non-elite sport in Northern Ireland until Friday, November 27.

The news comes after the  NI Executive finally reached a deal on circuit breaker measures.

Some sporting competitions had hoped to either start or resume this weekend, but will now be forced to wait until the end of the month before any restrictions are possibly eased.

Only elite sports can operate under present coronavirus guidelines - that includes Irish Premiership and Women's Premiership, inter-county GAA and Ulster Rugby games.

International football can also continue, with Northern Ireland playing Slovakia at Windsor Park tonight in front of 1060 fans.

The Irish FA issued a statement on Friday to remind clubs, players and officials that the suspension of "all football training and matches below elite level remain suspended until this extension is concluded."

The IFA added: "This includes Irish FA Foundation programmes, including Electric Ireland Shooting Stars and McDonald's Fun Football, and protocols laid out in the Irish FA's 'A Return to the Everyday Game' document remain suspended until the extension is concluded."

Many industries have been closed since October 16, as part of an effort to curb rising cases of  coronavirus.

The Department of Health has today reported a further 15 Covid-19 related deaths.

Eleven of these deaths are said to have occurred with the current reporting period, and four outside of it.

The death toll in Northern Ireland now stands at 825, according to the DoH.

Thursday's dashboard update reports a further 548 positive cases of the virus, bringing the total number of positive cases to 45,241 since the start of the pandemic.
