Restaurant plan for former Derby nightclub gets go-ahead

Plans to breathe new life into a former Derby nightclub and turn it into a restaurant and apartments have been given the go-ahead.

Back in May, proposals were submitted to Derby City Council for permission to transform Curzons, creating a restaurant on the ground floor and flats above.

The Curzon Street venue closed around five years ago and has stood empty ever since.

But now the building will be brought back into use after the city council decided to give the plans the go-ahead.

According to the original planning application, while the intention is for a restaurant on the ground floor, a variety of uses have been secured in order to offer flexibility when the property needs to be marketed to potential tenants.

In the planning documents submitted to the city council by Heatons, on behalf of the applicants, it said: “The floor space of the proposed commercial unit would measure approximately 202 square metres.

“This would predominantly be used as a dining area dedicated to the patrons, should the space be used as a restaurant.

“Through the removal of various existing stud walls, the ground floor area will become open plan to create a more vibrant space and allow natural light through the space.”

The plans state that the new restaurant could create 10 full-time jobs.

Granting permission, city council planners said: “The proposal would strengthen and integrate the city centre’s employment, leisure, cultural and residential functions and meet overall sustainability objectives.

“It would create new homes across the city centre and bring a vacant building back into use.

“The proposed alternative ground floor uses would be advantageous in maintaining the vitality and viability of this part of the Central Business District.”
