Restaurant owner who disappeared five months ago missed birth of baby

Police have appealed for help from the public to find a Perth man who disappeared five months ago without a trace, missing the birth of his child.

Yi Sun, 35, was last seen on Barrack Street in Perth's CBD at lunchtime on Wednesday, October 15 last year.

He had just had an argument with his heavily pregnant wife at the restaurant owned by the pair and stormed off on foot, leaving behind his wallet and keys.

Mr Sun's wife reported him missing three weeks later.

Detective Senior Constable Chris Hitchen from the Missing Person Unit said there had been no sign of him since.

"None of his friends of family have heard from him during that time period," Detective Senior Constable Hitchen said.

"His wife recently gave birth to a child, during which time he's had no contact with her or the child.

"Likewise his family have visited from China and during that time they haven't been able to make contact with him either.

"Obviously that increases our concern for him."

Police said Mr Sun had no affiliations with any criminal organisations and no history of self-harm, and there was no evidence he had left the country.

Man has record of going missing

Detective Senior Constable Hitchen said Mr Sun had a history of going missing for periods of time, and that was why his wife had taken some time to report his disappearance to police.

But he said Mr Sun had never been out of contact with his family for this long.

"Previously he was absent for a period of about eight days, and then returned," he said.

"Given it's now approximately five months, there's obviously greater concern for him."

Mr Sun is an Asian man, approximately 174 centimetres tall, with a slim build, black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact police.

Editor's note, Thursday, March 22, 2018: A day after issuing the appeal, WA Police said they had received new information indicating Mr Sun was residing overseas. They said they "no longer have concerns for his welfare".
