Restaurant openings: Vanille Patisserie, The Northman

Jan. 15--Vanille: The French-inspired patisserie is opening a new shop in Lakeview on Feb. 4. Vanille, which is known for its macarons, already has locations in Lincoln Park and in Chicago's French Market.

New items at the cafe include a line of gluten-free cakes, owner Sophie Evanoff says. There will also be cookies for dogs.

Don't lug your laptop there, though: "We have made a conscious decision not to offer (WiFi) so our customers get the chance to unplug," says Evanoff.

7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday-Saturday. 3243 N. Broadway, www.vanillepatisserie.com.

The Northman: Chicago's long-awaited cider pub is finally nearing an opening date -- expect doors to open in February, owners announced this week. The bar will offer more than 18 different ciders on draft and more than 80 by the can and bottle, along with a selection of beer and spirits.

A lunch menu will include sandwiches, salads and soups; at dinner, try everything from from Yorkshire pudding with braised short ribs and rosemary gravy to escargots with cider butter. 4337 N. Lincoln Ave.
