Can you handle spicy food? No, but can you really? All too often foodies like to exaggerate how much they can tolerate, before finding their bravado fails after taking one eye-watering mouthful. And one Thai restaurant has had enough.
The eatery has gone viral online after displaying a no refunds notice, telling customers they can't get their money back if they order spicy food but "can't handle it." Snapped by Rani Molla, the journalist sparked a debate after sharing a photo of the sign to Twitter. Posting as @ranimolla, she captioned the picture: "Local Thai place no longer suffering fools."
The printed warning reads: "Spice level warning: level 0-5. We will no longer issue refunds when you order your food spicy and can't handle it."
Sharing her verdict, Rani added: "Imagine ordering spicy food then trying to return it because it’s spicy? Arrestable offense."
But not everyone was so convinced, as became clear when hundreds commented to weigh in on the matter.
One person replied: "If I order a 7… dont make it a 7." A second said: "But spicy is not the same as heat."
And someone also pointed out: "It doesn’t help that asking for the same level of spicy yields different results by an order of magnitude, across restaurants, and even at the same restaurant, depending on the cook."
But most people loved the idea, praising the restaurant for its initiative.
"For the love of all that is holy, tell me where this is. I must visit!" said one fan. Another simply wrote: "Quite right!"
Several commenters were also shocked by the idea diners had asked for refunds.
"I will be tomato faced, sweating buckets and snotting up a storm before I return something labeled spicy for being too spicy," said one spice-lover.
A different person wrote: "I can't believe that there are people shameless enough to ask for money back because the food was too spicy. I feel like even if it was too much for me I'd have too much dignity to do that."
