Restaurant appealing for 'immediate' help after being hammered with 1,600 cancellations

Restaurant staff have appealed for "immediate" help and support after they suffered over 1,600 cancellations.

DINE Edinburgh would usually be fully booked at this time of year, with just days left in the run up to Christmas and New Year.

But with the government asking the public to stay home and a surge in Covid cases the restaurant has been hit with no shows and cancellations. The total of lost bookings 1,681 so far.

In light of this, staff have appealed for help for the hospitality sector, reports EdinburghLive.

Speaking out on social media, the restaurant said: "Definitely ‘not’ the most wonderful time of the year! Currently 1,681 cancellations.

"The hospitality sector needs your help and immediate support, most small businesses depend upon a busy December just to survive the quieter Jan - March months!"

It comes as the First Minister advised Scots to stay at home and limit their social gatherings as much as possible in order to have a more normal Christmas.

With Omicron now the dominant strain of Covid-19 in Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon said on Friday that a "tsunami of cases is starting to hit us", with the variant expected to see the country experience its highest ever case rates.

Speaking on Friday, the FM had asked the public to avoid socialising to stop the spread over the festive period.

Nicola Sturgeon warned: "Given that case numbers are already high, Omicron could take them higher than we have ever seen before.

"That's why we've put a new duty on businesses to reduce transmission within their premises.

"It's also why we're asking all of us to reduce the number of social contacts we have without our household.

"My ask of everyone now is this, in the run ip to Christmas stay at home as much as you can.

"If what matters most is spending time with loved ones on Christmas Day, don't go out before then and risk catching Covid.

"Covid in Omicron form is very infectious, much more than previous strains. If someone even in the same venue as you has it the chance of you catching it is much much higher.

"After Christmas if we go back to limiting our contacts further we can hope for a better January."
