Restaurant and sweet shop caught breaching coronavirus rules in Bridgend county

Council workers have given improvement notices to a sweet shop and restaurant in Bridgend county borough for breaching coronavirus rules.

Officers from the Shared Regulatory Service (SRS) found issues with people wearing face masks at Sweets & Treats in Commercial Street, Maesteg and Mr Big Bites in High Street, Ogmore Vale.

Documents published on the SRS website show council staff visited Mr Big Bites on Thursday, June 10, and people were not wearing suitable masks. Documents also show a member of staff at Sweets & Treats "forgot" to wear a mask on June 2 and were instructed to wear one "at all times when serving customers".

Both businesses were given 48 hours to comply with the Health Protection (Coronavirus Restrictions) (Wales) Regulations 2020. Failure to comply with an improvement notice can result in closure, a fixed penalty notice, or being taken to court.

Welsh Government guidelines state businesses have "a duty to take reasonable measures to minimise the risk of exposure to coronavirus" and " all need to work hard to keep Wales safe by following some simple guidance to reduce the risk".

The SRS, a partnership between South Wales Police and Bridgend, Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan councils, carries out checks on licensed premises to ensure they comply with government guidelines.

To date, 118 premises in Bridgend county borough have been caught breaching coronavirus regulations and given improvement notices, while seven local businesses have been temporarily closed.

The service has issued 112 improvement notices to businesses in Cardiff and 92 in Vale of Glamorgan.
