Resource bank of retired teachers to be set up

A resource bank of teachers who have retired will be created in the State, Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating a function to give away State Teachers’ Awards for 2021, Prof. Joseph Mundassery Memorial Literary Awards, and the Vidyarangam Art and Literary Awards at the renovated Shikshak Sadan here on Saturday morning.

The Minister said there were many retired teachers who were keen on working in the education sector. The government wanted to tap into the skills and experience of such teachers from the coming academic year. Those who were willing to provide voluntary service in a district would be categorised on the basis of their subject, and their talents utilised by the government.

Mr. Sivankutty said the teachers who had won awards had worked hard to improve their students’ minds and talents, and proven themselves in many a field. Against this backdrop, a workshop would be organised for the awardees to hear their suggestions in connection with curriculum revision.

The Minister said 14 primary teachers, 13 at the secondary level, nine in the higher secondary, and five in the vocational higher secondary wing had been selected for the State Teachers’ Awards for 2021. The awardees would get a cash purse of ₹10,000, citation, and a sculpture.

Besides these, the Prof. Joseph Mundassery Memorial Literary Award for 2020 to promote teachers’ literary interests in creative, scientific, and children’s literature categories were presented to D. Shaji, P. Suresh, and M. Krishnadas.

The Minister also gave away 16 Vidyarangam awards instituted to promote the creativity of students and teachers in State schools.

Minister for Transport Antony Raju, presided over the function. Director of General Education Jeevan Babu K. and senior officials of the General Education Department were present on the occasion.
