Residents who bought homes on the cliff edge explain why they took the plunge

Properties on the cliffside can be on sale at bargain prices and offer incredible sea views.

But... there is a risk that the homes could plunge off a cliff.

One resident who grapples with this issue is Lance Martin, an ex-soldier who moved to the Norfolk coast for his retirement.

After buying the idyllic property in Hemsby just under five years ago surveys reassured him that it would be at least 30 years before he needed to worry.

And he understood that coastal erosion would whittle away his garden, but he had stunning sea videos as a consolation.

But 2018’s Beast from the East left him in an unneviable position

FTER retiring to the Norfolk coast, Lance Martin soon grew used to the deafening sound of waves crashing against the cliffs 120ft away from his two-bedroom bungalow.

He accepted that the erosion they caused would whittle away his garden as the years passed. It was the price he paid for his plum position overlooking the sea.

What he was not expecting, however, was to hear a 'rumbling' underfoot as he put the kettle on one evening in March 2018 \u0097 just four months after moving in. He looked down to see the sea between his feet, the waves having swept his kitchen floor away.
