Residents warned of 24 hours of raging winds and snow blizzards

Residents in Perth and Kinross are being warned to batten down the hatches for a full 24 hours of raging winds bringing snow blizzards to many areas.

Storm Ciara is expected to bring high winds to Perthshire from Saturday into Sunday.

Heavy snow is due to fall on Monday and continue through to Tuesday.

Yesterday, Met office forecasters said severe winds of up to 80mph are set to batter the whole of Britain over this weekend.

The weather experts have taken the unsettled weather front seriously enough to issue a yellow weather warning for wind on Saturday and Sunday.

The warning will continue in some western parts of the region into Monday, along with a warning for snow.

This low pressure front coming in from the west, described as an ‘Atlantic barrage’, will slam down the entire length of the UK and could bring nation-wide travel chaos.

In a tweet the Met Office said: “#StormCiara has been named and will bring very unsettled weather across the UK through Saturday night and Sunday.

“Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected.”

Of particular interest to Perthshire residents was the warning over power cuts and bridges: “There is a small chance that some roads and bridges could close...and a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

“There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs.”

The Met Office added there is a small chance of “injuries and danger to life from flying debris” while the warning is in place.
