Residents warned not to hand over cash to people 'volunteering' to get their shopping

Residents have been warned not to hand over cash to people claiming to be 'volunteering' to get shopping for them.

Police have urged residents not to part with cash on the doorstep, giving it to someone they do not know or do not trust.

Officers say there will be well-meaning citizens who just want to help, but there will also be those 'with no moral scruples' looking to con people out of their money.

Police in Bury issued this warning on Facebook: "Do not hand over cash on your doorstep to someone you do not know or trust who is 'volunteering' to get shopping for you.

"There will be well-meaning people wanting to help but there will be people with no moral scruples, who will take advantage and keep your money."

Instead, residents are being advised to contact the community emergency hub if they need help getting supplies or are suffering with loneliness.

GMP Bury South posted: "If you require assistance to buy food, collect medical supplies or just want to talk contact the emergency community hub."

The Bury emergency hub can be contacted on 0161 253 5353.

Lines are open from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week.

Residents are asked to leave their name, address and contact details.

A member of the community hub will get back in touch and help residents.
