Scots in Cumbernauld have been urged not to set off fireworks after a ‘significant gas leak’.
Gas distribution company SGN said engineers are currently on site near Lye Brae in the North Lanarkshire town to resolve the issue.
Workers have put a cordon in place and Lye Brae has been closed off in both directions.
The company has also published an ‘exclusion zone’ where residents should not set off fireworks while the work is ongoing.
It currently remains unclear as to when the gas escape will be resolved in the area.
Locals have been reassured the gas network remains safe.
A spokesperson for SGN said: “We are currently on site near Lye Brae in Cumbernauld where there is a significant gas escape.
“Our engineers are working to safely make repairs to our gas main, but due to the complexity of this work, it’s too early to say when those repairs will be completed.
“To ensure everyone’s safety, a cordon has been put in place and Lye Brae has been closed in both directions.
“We’d like to reassure the local community that our gas network remains safe and there is no risk to their safety.”
The statement adds: “We understand there may be a number of firework displays planned for today and this evening, if you live within the exclusion zone shown on the map below, it’s really important that no fireworks are set off for safety reasons.
“We’re really sorry for the inconvenience this will cause.”
