Residents warned about online scam that claims to offer council tax rebate

Residents are being warned after a number of people received emails urging them to claim a council tax rebate.

Rhondda Cynon Taf council are warning residents not to click on links and share bank details if they receive a suspicious email.

The email appears in the style of a Gov.uk website and claims the recipient is eligible for a council tax reduction.

The council want to remind people that council tax is not dealt with by the UK Government or Welsh Government.

Residents are being warned about an email like this (Rhondda Cynon Taf council)

Part of the email states that the reduction is due to the fact the recipient is on low income or receives benefits.

It says: "You are getting a Council Tax Reduction (this used to be called Council Tax Benefit) considering you're on a low income or get benefits."

It then claims that an amount of £640.99 is available through a bank transfer.

Earlier this week, people in Wales were warned about a scam text from 'Emma' that could cost them £20.
