Residents urged to leave homes due to bridge that 'could collapse under its own weight'

Residents have been told to leave their homes after fears an "unsafe" bridge could collapse under its own weight.

People living in Forge Mews in Newport have been strongly advised to leave their homes as "soon as possible" after Old Bassaleg Bridge was found to be unsafe in a structural review.

There are fears the bridge "could potentially collapse under its own weight," Newport council said in a statement on Friday night.

The bridge has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians since 4pm, which means that emergency services would not be able to access the street in the event of an emergency.

Any resident that does decide to leave their home will be offered suitable temporary accommodation.

Traffic management officers will be on site over the weekend to ensure there is no access over the bridge into Forge Mews. Pedestrian access from Park View onto Caerphilly Road and into Bassaleg, using the footbridge over the A467, will also be prohibited.

Remedial work will start on the Old Bassaleg Bridge as soon as possible. Interim access arrangements are also being explored.

In a statement, Newport City Council said: "This is a serious situation, and it is our assessment that the bridge poses too great a risk to remain open.

"We thank the residents of Forge Mews for their co-operation and understanding."
