South Lanarkshire consumer and trading standards team are urging residents to be aware of cold callers.
The local authority issued a warning last week after an elderly woman fell victim to distraction burglary in Hamilton.
And now, residents in East Kilbride are being told to stay alert after a similar offence.
The authorities consumer and trading standards team were contacted by a woman whose disabled mother was approached in her home by a man looking to clean gutters in East Kilbride.
The man attempted to gain access to the elderly woman’s home in Calderwood.
The woman didn’t allow him access to the house but did agree to him cleaning the gutters, believing him to be known to her neighbour – it turned out he wasn’t.
When the woman’s daughter arrived, she asked the man to show ID, which he refused.
The man was then asked to leave. The issue was reported to 101 at the time.
As a result of repeated cold callers, the council's consumer and trading standards team have issued the following advice
- Please inform elderly relatives and friends not to engage with cold callers on the doorstep.
- If they require work, they can choose a vetted trader from our Buy With Confidence list of trusted traders: www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk
- Stay safe
