Residents told to evacuate their homes as more floods expected overnight

Residents in Gunthorpe are being advised to leave their homes as a number of properties and roads are expected to be flooded overnight.

The Environment Agency had a total of 31 flood warnings in place on Monday, February 17, in the aftermath of Storm Dennis.

Nottinghamshire Police are warning people in the Gunthorpe area to 'take action' as heavy rain is set to batter the area in the early hours of the morning.

A rest centre has been opened at Southwell Leisure Centre for those affected, if they can't stay with friends or family.

Residents will be visited to ensure they receive flooding advice, while Nottinghamshire Police and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service will also be working in the area throughout the night.

Superintendent Suk Verma, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "We have taken the decision to advise people to leave their homes now as the flooding is expected to impact the area in the early hours of the morning when people may be asleep.

"Whilst it is always difficult to predict the exact impact, current flood predictions show this area will be affected and we would urge people to leave while it is safe rather than risk the need to be rescued later."
