Residents to have say on plans to move Barlinnie prison to Provan Gasworks

Residents who live in the north east of Glasgow are being asked to have their say on plans to move Barlinnie prison to Provan Gasworks.

Provan Gasworks, which is home to two massive column-guided gasometres, is considered as one of Glasgow's most iconic industrial landmarks.

The site, which is owned by National Grid Partnerships, is currently the only location being considered for the replacement of HMP Barlinnie.

Residents are invited to a free drop-in session at St Roch's Football Club today to to have their say on the proposal.

Barlinnie was considered past its best and was said to have the worst conditions in the whole of the UK and this meant the SPS had little choice but closure.

They appointed the commercial property developers Colliers International to find them a new site, who spent five years examining about 40 options across the west of Scotland before deciding on the gasworks.

A Scottish Prison Service spokesman said: “Since instructions were issued to our property/land consultants Colliers International in May 2014, five reports have been produced covering sites within the city of Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire local authority areas.

“A site at Provanmill, owned by National Grid Partnerships, is the only site being considered for the replacement of HMP Barlinnie.”

Anyone who resides nearby should get along to St Roch's Football Club on Royston Road between 2pm and 8pm today to discuss the plans.
