Residents speak of shock after car ploughs into County Durham home

Residents have spoken of their shock after a car ploughed into a house in County Durham .

Part of a property on School Terrace in South Moor, near Stanley , was demolished after the Vauxhall Zafira crashed through the bathroom .

Paramedics took one person to the University Hospital of North Durham for treatment following the crash at around 8am on Thursday.

It came after police officers were called to another incident further down the road, where a pedestrian was hit by a car.

The pedestrian was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with head injuries.

Residents were alerted to the incident at School Terrace after hearing a 'loud bang' outside.

One woman, who wished to remain nameless, said: "I was sitting waiting to take my daughter to college when I heard a loud bang.

"The road sweeper was going round when I looked out the window and it was across the road.

"I actually thought it had hit something but then I heard another bang.

"I thought it can't be that and looked across, saw the lady's car across the road was damaged and had smashed into the wall.

"I looked down the street and saw another car had smashed into the house down the bottom.

"It was horrible. I know him.

"I rang the police straight away because it didn't look like anyone was there.

"People started coming and I was still on the phone to the police."

Another resident said: "I heard a loud bang. It must have been when the car hit the wall.

"I was in the sitting room and I actually thought it was my upstairs neighbour dropping something. I never came outside."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said a double-crewed ambulance and three crews from the Hazardous Area Response Team were called out.

Durham Constabulary confirmed they were called at around 8.10am to the incident.

Officers were also called to the collision on Park Road at around 6.50am after man was hit by a car.

The extent of his injuries are unknown, a spokesperson for the force said.

"The road was closed for about three hours but has since reopened and the vehicle has been recovered from the scene," they added.

A number of police cars and a crash investigation team could be seen at the scene, with the road reopening at around 10am.

A nearby resident said: "I heard a crash at about 6.45am. I saw a chap was lying in the road.

"Quite a few police cars arrived and an ambulance."

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 6.48am to a person who had been hit by a car on Park Road.

"We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance and took a patient to the RVI with head injuries."
