Residents speak of 'inconvenient' road closure due to 'huge' 4-foot crater

Residents in a Nottinghamshire town have spoken out about a 'huge' crater which has left part of a busy road closed. The large hole has opened up due to a burst water main on Mansfield Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield.

The location of the four-foot deep hole is the corner of Mansfield Road and Outram Street, outside the New Cross pub. Severn Trent said it was working on getting the repairs done and the road reopened 'as soon as possible'.

Residents said the closure has caused the high street to be 'rammed' and described it as 'inconvenient'. Sixty-one-year-old Dawn Stanley said Outram Street is usually busy.

She said: "It needs to be filled in, it wasn’t that big before. It was a big pothole. It started with the frost and just got bigger. With the diverted traffic, they will have trouble because Outram Street is busy."

Nathan Barnes, 57, said it is causing disruption to the traffic in the town. Mr Barnes said: "It’s huge. The traffic is just awful, it’s very busy around here. Hopefully they hurry and get it done, it’s quite inconvenient."

Another resident, Phillip Windsor, 69, said the roads are packed with traffic. He said: "I came here two days ago, cars were going over it, nothing was being done. I’m glad to see something is being done now. As you can see the high street is now rammed."

A Severn Trent spokesperson said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the burst pipe on the corner of Mansfield Road and Outram Street in Sutton-in-Ashfield as we know how busy this junction is. We managed to agree a road closure this morning and our teams managed to complete the repair to the pipe by 2.30pm this afternoon.

"It is now our priority to get the road reinstated as soon as possible – as this takes place, the road closure of Mansfield Road between the junctions of Redcliffe Street and Dalestorth Street will remain in place to keep Severn Trent engineers and other road users safe. Again, we’re really sorry for the inconvenience caused by this as we know this is a busy junction - it’s a priority for us to get the reinstatement completed and Mansfield Road reopened as soon as possible."
