Residents slam council for 'baffling' dog poo signs

A council has been slammed after apparently warning dog owners they'll be prosecuted for putting the wrong dog poo - in dog poo bins.

Locals say they are "baffled" by the notice on the bins which says using it for dog mess from home will be classed as "fly-tipping".

The notice reads: "This dog waste bin is provided for the disposal of dog fouling arising from dog walking only.

"The bin is not provided for the disposal of dog waste from residents gardens.

"Disposal of such waste in this way is classed as fly-tipping. Anyone caught fly-tipping will be prosecuted."

But residents in Highbridge and Burnham, in North Somerset, are baffled as to how Sedgemoor District Council intend to distinguish between dog mess from home and from a walk.

Jacky Pelling commented: "Are they lurking round a corner waiting to see if your dog has recently had a poo? Are they checking when you put it in the bin to see if it’s fresh?"

Meanwhile Julian Wellings said: "Sedgemoor District Council are happy to fleece me of £2,000 a year in council tax, but seem opposed to home owners disposing on dog waste in a responsible manner?"

But Clare Faun from the council told the BBC the notice was intended to "raise awareness".

She said it did not cost anything to put the sign up.
