Residents shocked after man's body found near busy Long Eaton canal footpath

Long Eaton residents have reacted with shock after a man's body was found near a popular walking route.

Police found the body between the River Erewash and Erewash Canal, near to the junction of Cavendish Road and Bennett Street in Long Eaton.

The body was found at around 2am on Monday (April 8) and police remained at the scene all day. Police divers were also at the scene and a cordon was put in place.

Resident Cheryl Garton, 55, of Sandiacre, said: “I walk down here every afternoon and it is a shock to see.

“This path is popular with children, joggers, cyclists and walkers so to hear something like this has happened is upsetting.

“I did hear of a body being found here a while ago but I thought it was quite rare.”

A dog walker who lives nearby agreed.

She said: “I walk my dog here every day but I must admit that is not a part I like to go to on my own.

“I have seen so many police today and I saw lots of evidence bags being taken away earlier. It’s a shock to hear and it is a worry for parents definitely.”

A man whose garden overlooks the canal added: “That’s five I know of now in the last five years, there’s been police here all day and a cordon. It’s very sad.”

Another man added: “I didn’t know anything about it but I have seen a police presence today. I walked past a group of police officers along the side of the canal.

A Derbyshire Police spokeswoman said: "Officers are currently working to recover the body and establish the circumstances which led to the man's death.

"The investigation is currently in its early stages and no further information is available at this time.

"Further updates will be released, once more information becomes available."

The news comes just three weeks after a 37-year-old was found in the canal on March 18.
