Residents' shock as armed police descend on street after Walker stabbing

Armed police descended on a Newcastle street after a man was stabbed.

Emergency services were called after a 32-year-old man was found injured on Courtfield Road in Walker on Thursday.

Around six police cars, a police dog and armed officers were at the scene of the incident, which happened at close to the A167 junction.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service was also called to the incident, with residents hearing the helicopter land in a nearby field.

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said she returned from the school run to find armed police on the street.

She said: "I came back and parked at the house. The police told us to get in the house because there were men with guns.

"It all happened very fast. It was scary to come back to."

Another woman said it was terrible to hear what had happened.

She added: "There were about six or seven police cars, the police dog was going about and there was armed response.

"There was a lad on the corner with a gun. They were here for about an hour or so."

Another nearby resident said the police vehicles left with the lights flashing.

He said: "They were here for quite a while and then they all jumped on their cars and went away with the blue lights flashing.

"There were about six of them. It was a surprise to see this morning. It was still dark when they first arrived."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 8.25am on Thursday we received a report a man had been assaulted in Wallsend.

“Officers and emergency services attended the scene where they found a 32-year-old male with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, consistent with a bladed article.

“Enquiries into this incident are ongoing and firearms officers were deployed to the scene and have also been carrying out enquiries at another address in Walker.

“The victim and offender are believed to be known to each other and there is no wider risk to the public but extra patrols are being carried out to offer community reassurance and anyone with concerns should approach an officer.

“Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact officers on 101, quoting log 171 191219.”
