Residents say McDonald's and KFC dumped rubbish 'is ruining the area'

Calls are being made for more punishment for fast food eaters who throw rubbish on the floor causing litter to "ruin" the area.

The KFC and McDonald's restaurants are regularly busy on Clifton Lane and residents say they often see drivers who have used the drive-trhu dump rubbish from their car window before leaving.

On windy days the rubbish can blow into nearby fields or into the housing estate - and people say they have had enough.

Kevin Bradley, 55, a joiner of Clifton, said: "There have been issues for a while. I've seen people dump rubbish from their car, it's disgusting and it's ruining the area.

"I think there should be someone or cameras set up to watch people in the car parks and take the number plates of anyone they see dumping litter. More should be done so they are fined on the spot.

"On a windy day the rubbish blows all over the place, into fields and all sorts, it's awful."

Jenny Greer, 59, of Clifton, added: "I'm sick of it. They are always really busy and people don't seem to care what impact it will have on people if they just throw it out their window.

"People need to be better educated on it. It is an awful thing to do."

Both fast food giants say they conduct litter picks around the restaurants to try to combat the issue.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “We take our responsibility around litter very seriously, which is why we conduct daily litter patrols around the restaurant, and provide bins in both restaurants and car parks to encourage customers to dispose of their litter responsibly.

"We are committed to keeping the community litter free - we work very closely with local residents and support their NG11 Clean Champions initiative, where our people volunteer their time  and the restaurant provides refreshments to everyone taking part.”

A KFC spokesperson added: "We never want to be a bad neighbour. We always encourage our fans to throw away their litter in the bins provided and our team members do their bit too, carrying out regular litter picks around our restaurants in Nottingham to keep them as clean and tidy as possible.”
