Residents return home following controlled explosion and bomb discovery in Ollerton

Residents have been allowed to return to their homes after police conducted a controlled explosion on a suspected mortar bomb.

Around 10 properties were evacuated on Walesby Road, Ollerton, at about 1.30pm on June 1 after the bomb was found in a garden.

Nottinghamshire Police were called to the scene and have since confirmed they managed to conduct the controlled explosion away from the residential area.

Residents returned to their homes shortly afterwards.

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Police said: "Residents have returned to their homes in Ollerton after a suspected World War II mortar bomb was found in a garden.

"Officers from Nottinghamshire Police were called to Walesby Road, Ollerton, at around 1.30pm yesterday. Around ten homes were evacuated.

"Residents were able to return home yesterday afternoon and bomb disposal officers carried out a controlled explosion on the device away from the scene."

Shells are typically fired in a high-arching ballistic trajectory from a device called a mortar.

The incident came after police carried out a controlled explosion on another suspected World War II mortar found on the banks of the River Meden in Perlethorpe, on May 31.
