Residents report seeing 'police cars everywhere' after man stabbed in neck in Mansfield

People living in a residential area of Mansfield reported seeing "police cars everywhere" and helicopters circling the area after a man was stabbed in the neck.

Nottinghamshire Police remain at the scene in Kitchener Drive following the incident, which happened at about 5.40pm on Sunday, June 14.

The victim, a 30-year-old man, suffered a stab wound to the neck and was taken to hospital.

His injuries are not currently believed to be life-threatening.

Residents in the area expressed their shock in the days following the incident, with one saying he fears going outside.

Andy Merrills, 33, lives across from where the incident happened on neighbouring Broxtowe Drive.

"I was out playing in the back garden with my lad and I didn't know what was happening", he told Nottinghamshire Live.

"My missus said that there was police and when I came out there were police cars everywhere, and ambulances.

"It's very worrying because it's the worst thing that's ever happened on this street since I moved here 10 years ago.

"With coronavirus and all the protests going on, as well as this happening, it makes you not want to come outside at all."

Patrick Donegani, 64, who also lives nearby, said he was first aware of the incident after hearing two police helicopters.

"All I heard was the two helicopters flying around at about half 5, and then I noticed the street was cordoned off", he said.

"There was a policeman guarding the middle of the road and a police woman at the house.

"I didn't actually know until the next day what had happened and that it was a stabbing. I really hope he pulls through."

Igida Romanova, 35, out with her five-year-old son, said she moved into the area thinking it was a "quiet neighbourhood" after previously living near the scene of a separate, fatal stabbing in August 2019..

"The street was rammed with people out to have a look at what was happening", she said.

"I moved to Foster Street half a year ago because the area before me was around Newgate Lane, where there was another stabbing.

"I thought I was moving to a quiet neighbourhood but then this happens. It's scary."

A 22-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder has been released without charge.

Nottinghamshire Police have issued a renewed appeal for information and witnesses.

Detective Inspector Kim Binns, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We’re treating this incident very seriously, with around 20 detectives working hard on the investigation and who are following up numerous lines of enquiry including forensic examinations, CCTV and house-to-house enquiries.

“In addition to that we have uniformed officers who are actively seeking to trace those responsible for this serious incident and who remain on patrol in the area where this happened to provide reassurance to local residents.

“We’re keen to speak to anyone who hasn’t yet come forward and who might have information which could help us with our investigation.

“Did you see anything unusual or suspicious in the area around the time of this incident? Any information you have , no matter how small, could be really crucial to our enquiries."

If you can help with the investigation, call Nottinghamshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 624 of June 14, 2020, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
