A public health physician and an 11-year-old entrepreneur were honoured at the Lake Macquarie Awards ceremony.

Public health physician Dr David Durrheim was named Lake Mac Ambassador for 2022 for his efforts in keeping the community safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, but he said he has the community to thank.

"The award is an incredible honour. I have been a public face for the pandemic response but we as a community have worked together as a team to suppress the virus, to get vaccinated and the response from the community has been phenomenal," he said.

Dr Durrheim helped guide the Hunter region through the COVID-19 pandemic, providing messages of what people should do and giving clear information on the risks of the virus.

"The virus is going to throw more surprises, I am certain of that. When it emerged in December it was a complete surprise, but as a community we are resilient and we work together," he said.

"On Saturday night I saw the wonderful work that volunteers have done during the pandemic and saw what a wonderful community it is with people going the extra mile and doing extraordinary things for the community and especially people at greater risk.

"To be recognised alongside them was something very special. It came as a great surprise, but a great honour."

The award ceremony recognised the city's high achievers in sport, volunteering and the community across 13 categories.

11-year-old Xavier Neil was announced as one of the city's youngest Young Citizen of the Year for his work raising more than $70,000 for local cancer charities.

His 'Good X Karma' soap and lip balm products are stocked in more than 25 local businesses, with all profits going to support cancer patients.
