Residents organise public meeting for new Burnbank Community Action Group

A group of residents and business people have formed an action group in Burnbank, Hamilton.

Burnbank Community Action Group has been set up following a number of recent incidents in the area.

Police were called to three incidents which took place within the same week at the Burnbank Centre.

At around 4.10pm on Thursday, June 20, officers attended the Burnbank Centre, to reports that a man had been assaulted to the head.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Police were called to an incident in Burnbank Centre at 4.10pm on Thursday, June 20 following reports of a man being injured.

“Officers attended and the man was taken to Hairmyres Hospital for minor injuries to his ear. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances around this incident.”

On Sunday, June 16, a 27-year-old man was assaulted in the centre.

And the following day emergency services were called to George Street in the centre following reports of a blaze at a block of flats.

Now residents and business owners have joined forces to form an action group set up to bring about positive changes to the area.

A public meeting has been arranged for Wednesday, July 3, at 6.30pm with the location to be confirmed. For more details, follow the Burnbank Community Action Group on Facebook.

Ian Buchanan, of Buchanan Butchers in the Burnbank Centre, has helped to set up the group. He said: “We set up the group for residents and business owners of the Burnbank area to pull together to create a better community for everyone.

“We hope to get everyone together and plan to have a public meeting soon to try and work together to make positive change.”
