Residents ordered to replace dozens of bins destroyed in huge Falkirk fire

Residents in a Falkirk housing estate have hit out at the local authority after they were told they'd have to pay to replace bins which were deliberately set on fire.

The blaze broke out near a block of flats on Windsor Crescent in Maddiston at around 12:30am on Wednesday April, 7.

Around 40 household waste bins were torched, leaving flames and smoke flying into the air.

Those who live there have told the Record that Falkirk Council have asked for cash to replace each bin.

One person said: "I think it's an absolute joke, it's not our fault our bins were set on fire.

"They want to charge us £25 per bin, and each house has at least three bins.

"I really don't have the cash to splash out like that, and even if I did, I certainly would not be paying to replace them.

"That's what I pay council tax for."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police were called around 12.30am on Wednesday, 7 April, 2021 following the report a bin shed on fire on Windsor Crescent, Falkirk.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended and extinguished the fire safely and there were no injuries.

Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fire are ongoing and which is currently being treated as suspicious."

Falkirk Live has contacted Falkirk Council for a comment.
