Residents of Spanish island Mallorca are protesting the overtourism of their home on 26 Sunday July.
Menys Turisme, Mes Vida (Less Tourism, More Life); a social group based in Mallorca, Spain, organised the demonstration to fight back against how mass tourism is currently impacting the cost of living for locals.
Within the last 20 years the population of Mallorca, Spain has increased from 280,000 to 1.25 million while the tourism rates have increased from 7.5 million to just over 19 million. With such a drastic change protesters have revealed that the number of holiday rentals built is now making it difficult for locals to afford housing.
Menys Turisme, Mes Vida have declared that the issue is now at a breaking point, stating in a social media post "the resident population suffers an unprecedented housing crisis and a progressive decline in living conditions,".
"We declare that Mallorca has reached its limit – its ecological, territorial and social limits; the limit of human pressure and the limit of what its residents can endure.’" said the activist group.
