The Government have been urged to provide financial support to homeowners in a north Dublin apartment complex who face massive bills to solve fire deficiency problems in the building.
It has been estimated that the cost of remedial works in the Verdemont complex in Blanchardstown will cost €50,000 per home.
Local councillor Paul Donnelly expressed "shock" at the high cost of the repairs and called on the Government to provide financial assistance to residents.
He said: “I am absolutely shocked at the massive cost of the remedial works in the entire apartment complex.
“I visited the apartments with campaigner Tony Rochford after he discovered many problems with the apartments several years ago.
“Tony has now been completely vindicated.
“The residents of Priory Hall were supported and the Verdemont residents should also be supported by the government."
The complex has been the scene of tragedy in the past.
In 2002, young couple Lousie Wall and Mick Farrell died after a blaze broke out in their apartment.
A coroner's report found that there were a number of fire safety issues in the flat.
The report found that three of the five air vents were blocked up, smoke alarms weren't fitted properly and the fire door in the kitchen was missing a part and would not close properly.
Councillor Donnelly called for a review of the deaths of the couple.
He said: "The family have consistently campaigned for such a review following concerns that the fire spread so rapidly."
A number of residents also had a lucky escape when a fire broke out in the complex two years ago.
Up to 100 people were forced to evacuate after a blaze broke out in the top floor of the building.
Miraculously, no one was injured in that incident but 24 homes were damaged in the blaze.
