Residents living next to 'noisy' Wetherspoon pub beer garden fear expansion plans

Residents living next to a popular Wetherspoon pub in the city find it hard to sleep because of noise coming from the beer garden and fear the situation could become worse after the pub chain revealed plans to make the garden bigger.

The company has lodged plans to make improvements to The Gooseberry Bush, in Peel Street, to offer its customers "the best facilities possible".

A large apartment block, called Charleston House, sits just metres away from the pub garden, towards North Sherwood Street, and residents said noise coming from punters in the beer garden was an issue - particularly when people left at kick-out time in the evenings.

Paul Ford-Murphy, 55, managing director of Charleston House Nottingham Ltd, the firm which owns the apartments, said professionals lived in the block including surgeons and university lecturers who were affected by the noise.

He said: "The most important thing is the noise that's created, not necessarily the smoke. People live with that.

"We have not got a problem with the inside of the pub. It's basically when people are leaving the pub and hanging out screaming in the car park."

He said antisocial behaviour in Peel Street had become worse in recent years, adding: "We are tax payers, people who live here deserve peace and quiet.

"We have had people move out because of the noise on Peel Street early in the morning. You have to be here to see it.

"It's unbelievable at times.

"If you are a professional person and have lectures in the morning, or you are doing surgery, you need a good night's sleep.

"When it comes to the medical professional, they do not work normal hours - they work shifts. They need to sleep."

Mr Ford-Murphy, who himself lives in Peel Street facing the Arboretum, explained the apartment block was a former women's maternity hospital.

When asked about the plans to make the beer garden bigger, he added: "It would be horrendous for them (residents).

"I do not think it's been thought through properly."

Another Charleston House resident wrote a letter voicing their opinion on the issue.

It read: "Many residents of Charleston House patronise the pub.

"However, what we will not accept and cannot tolerate is the antisocial noise that is inevitable given design and proximity as between [Charleston] House and [Gooseberry] Bush."

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "People living nearby to a pub have absolutely every right to voice opinions.

"However, we will just await the outcome of the planning committee decision."

A planning application to extend the beer garden was rejected last year. And fresh plans have been submitted to the council for consideration.

The pub chain also wants to extend the beer garden of The Last Post, in Beeston.

Speaking previously, Mr Gershon said: "Our aim is to extend the size of our beer gardens at both pubs.

"This would mean extending into the car parks of each pub.

“We strive to offer our customers the best facilities possible and believe they welcome a bigger beer garden with more opportunities for customers to eat and drink outside.

“We would be looking to invest hundreds of thousands of pounds across the two projects.

“At this stage there are no on site dates as we await the outcome of the planning decisions.”
