Residents left with nowhere to go after homes are flooded with potentially 'contaminated' water

Residents in Oldham say they have 'nowhere to go' after their homes were flooded with potentially contaminated water on Saturday.

Joanna Kuziora, who has two young children, was left in tears as water seeped through the front door of her home on Whitebank Road in Limeside.

The 31-year-old, who lives with husband Rafa, said her floor has been destroyed and she's been told to evacuate.

Water, four inches deep, entered 12 homes on the road at around midday during heavy downpours.

Another eight properties were flooded externally.

A United Utilities spokesman said it was not yet possible to confirm whether the water was contaminated.

Joanna said: "My husband was at home and the water came through the front door. The children shouted that the water was in the living room. There was so much water.

"Everything is flooded. My husband slipped in the water. The walls are wet. We don't have a place to stay, we know nothing. The smell in the house is awful.

"All you can do is cry. They said we have to evacuate the house.

"They are checking the house to see how bad it is."

"He called the council and fire service. The children are really scared. The dog is terrified."

Another homeowner, Danny Livesey was sitting watching TV when he saw water coming through the door.

The 25-year-old said: "All the water came in, I was panicking. It's absolutely horrendous.

"One second it was fine and before you know it, it was in four inches. It's all in the front room, the kitchen and downstairs toilet.

"The floor is destroyed."

Fire crews, representatives from Oldham Council, and United Utilities were called to the scene following the incident.

A spokesman for Manchester Fire said the flooding was caused by a 'possible burst water main'.

But United Utilities said they are unsure of the cause - and said they cannot confirm whether the water is contaminated.

A spokesman for the water firm said: "It came in as a burst water main. When we arrived at the scene we discovered it wasn't a burst water main. Engineers are on site trying to find out where the water is coming from.

"They are not sure if it is the sewer. Police have closed off the road."

Oldham Council has been contacted for comment.

The rain also caused flooding in other parts of the region.

Elsewhere vehicles became stuck on Crossley Road, a notorious area for flooding in Heaton Chapel.

Firefighters confirmed they were called to a number of incidents - in Littleborough, Wigan, Manchester and Oldham during the floods.

And there are fears more bad weather could be on its way -with a yellow weather warning in place from 8pm tonight until 5am tomorrow morning.

There are two flood warnings in place for the region.

They include the Upper River Irwell catchment with Oldham, Bolton, Rochdale, Haslingden, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall.

And Upper River Douglas in Lancashire, which could affect people in Wigan and Horwich.
