A house has been severely damaged after it was hit by lightning.

Fire crews, the ambulance service and officials from Carmarthenshire Council were at the scene of the incident in Rhosnewydd in Tumble after residents said they heard something that sounded like an explosion at around 6am on Wednesday.

Two people were taken to Glangwili Hospital while one property has sustained severe damage to its roof and another property has suffered minor damage.

Residents said they were woken by something that sounded "like a bomb" which could also be heard in neighbouring villages.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "I've never heard anything like it. It sounded like a bomb had gone off. There was this huge bang and everyone's car alarms went off. We didn't know what it was and then the fire trucks pulled up."

Fire engines arrived just before 6am and remain at the scene.

Western Power said there was a power cut in area and residents in Tumble and the surrounding area say that they lost electricity for a number of hours.

"Crews were involved in making the scene safe."
