Residents in The Meadows welcome plans for CCTV at block of flats

Residents have welcomed proposals bringing CCTV to a block of flats in The Meadows, describing it as a "much-needed" deterrent.

Nottingham City Council has proposed in its latest ward report for the area to discuss introducing cameras around Cavan Court, just off Queens Walk where the trams pass.

The court has a number of flats within it.

People who live in the block of flats and close by said it can be "uneasy" to walk through the area late at night and said anything that could pick up potential crimes should be welcomed.

Mum of two Nicky Thomas, 31, said: "I think it's a good idea to be honest. There are a few little alleyways around here and dark spots and walk-throughs so if any crimes were happening it might be good to cover this.

"I've always felt safe living here, my kids have grown up here and we've had no issues. But you do hear of things in The Meadows so I think it would help keep people safe or lead to people being caught."

Ben Johnson, 29, of The Meadows, added: "People think it might be a bit Big Brother, but if you're doing nothing wrong it won't matter.

"It's a good move. If it makes people feel safer. You hear about fights happening and anyone who might be looking to rob a property will be on camera and bang to rights.

"It's not very well-lit at nights around here so hopefully it is still effective."

Stephanie Lee, a 40-year-old cleaner, added: "It will be reassuring for people to know it's there if approved. I think it's clever. People should feel safe. It's much-needed."

Details of costs and where the CCTV would be introduced are yet to be confirmed.

James Walker, Nottinghamshire Police's Neighbourhood Inspector for The Meadows, said: “We are committed to working with the local community in The Meadows to ensure that all residents feel safe.

“With this in mind, we welcome anything that aids in the prevention and prosecution of crime and CCTV is a really effective method of both."
