Residents in Northern Ireland to kneel outside their homes in support for Black Lives Matter

Residents across Northern Ireland are to show their support for Black Lives Matter by kneeling outside their homes on Thursday.

The gesture is intended as a symbol of solidarity with victims of racial injustice in the US and the rest of the world.

It is one of many gestures of support with the movement, which has seen Northern Ireland join the rest of the world in protesting against police brutality and racism.

This week, residents in South Belfast have found creative ways to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement in their area.

Tributes have turned up in places such as the gates of Ormeau Park, where residents have included foot-shaped cards and pairs of socks hung up with messages of solidarity, which has seen protests break out across the world.

Claire Hanna, MP for South Belfast, applauded the "characteristically creative and meaningful response" on social media and added that she would be making something with her children to add to the tributes.

The idea for the tributes came from a local group for residents wishing to "voice opposition to racial injustice" safely, and who have said that they will remove the items at the end of the week.

It comes as a fund set up for Black Lives Matter protesters in Belfast and Derry raised more than £18,000.

The fund, which was started by Alliance for Choice, was set up to cover fees imposed by the PSNI for protesters at Saturday's Black Lives Matter protest.

Nearly 1,000 people have donated to the fund, with 952 donations bringing the current total to £18,739.
