Residents in Lanarkshire town raise concerns over road safety following horrific crash

Police in Carluke say they are continuing their investigations after a mother and her three children were knocked down last Wednesday.

Now locals have told Lanarkshire Live that the road is no stranger to incident, with some calling for action to be taken to make it safer.

We told you last week how the family were hospitalised after being struck by a car, leaving the woman and one child in a "serious condition".

Speaking with locals after the event, w e heard how the busy road is a source of concern, with one local telling us of a bad accident last year.

Concerned local businessman, Ali Hamrah, of Perfect Press dry cleaners, told us what he saw last week.

He said: "There were three kids lying on the street.

"I went outside for a few minutes and they were receiving medical assistance.

"There have been a few car accidents. It is a very busy road most of the time. In May last year there was a serious accident.

"I think something needs to be done. I think it needs more signs to make it safer.”

Following the incident, the road - which is close to nearby Kirkton Primary and St Athanasius Primary - remained closed until 6pm as police carried out their investigations.

Inspector William Broach told us this week : “Officers are continuing their inquiries into a crash on James Street, Carluke, which took place near the junction with Kirkton Street, around 3.10pm on Wednesday, October 27.

“We continue to ask for any members of the public who witnessed the crash and has yet to speak to the police, to please come forward. We are also keen to hear from anyone with potential dash cam footage from the area."

We spoke with an elderly dog walker who raised concerns about the road.

Wishing not to be named, he added: “It’s the main road and there’s non stop traffic.”

However, Colin Park, head of road and transportation services at South Lanarkshire Council, said the road is considered safe, with no issues in the last decade.

In response to last week's accident, he said: “Our thoughts are with all those involved in the accident.

"And our education staff are working with local schools to offer support for anyone affected by it.

“We constantly monitor road accidents as one of the key criteria for determining when and where improvement action should be taken.

"In this case, until Wednesday’s sad events, in the last 10 years there had been no accidents involving pedestrian injury on this stretch of road, and no accidents at all reported to us at the crossing in question.

“However, while this location therefore does not have a history of injury accidents, we will await the outcome of the police investigation before considering if any actions are necessary.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101. Information can also be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
