Residents In Hualien Face Lengthy Clean Up After Earthquake

Earthquake aftermath in Qinghai

Residents in Hualien faced a lengthy clean up on Thursday as teams worked to clear debris and assess buildings for structural damage. The aftermath of the earthquake left many homes in disarray, with significant damage reported in various areas.

One resident, Deng Huimei, described the chaos in his own home, stating that while the structure remained intact, large cracks had appeared along the staircase and chunks of wall had fallen off. Deng recounted the terrifying experience of the quake, mentioning how he had to hold onto things to prevent being knocked down by the violent shaking.

Having lived through multiple earthquakes, Deng was prepared and quickly grabbed a bicycle helmet and sturdy shoes to protect himself from potential hazards like broken glass and debris. His quick thinking and readiness to help others demonstrate the resilience of the community in the face of natural disasters.

Hualien Mayor Wei Jia-Yan provided insights into the extent of the damage, noting that some buildings had partially collapsed and would require demolition and reconstruction. He emphasized the importance of earthquake preparedness, mentioning that children in Hualien are taught from a young age how to respond to seismic events.

Mayor Wei highlighted the need for residents to remain calm, take necessary precautions, and evacuate safely during earthquakes. By following these guidelines, individuals can ensure their safety and minimize the risks associated with such incidents.

The collaborative efforts of cleanup crews, structural engineers, and local authorities are crucial in restoring normalcy to the affected areas and ensuring the well-being of residents in Hualien.
