Residents heard 'massive bang' as police car flipped during crash in Broxtowe

Residents have spoken of the moment they were woken up in the night by a "massive bang" as a police car crashed as it was responding to an emergency.

The incident happened in Strelley Road, Broxtowe, at around 2am on Sunday, May 23.

A family living opposite the scene of the crash, just outside Broxtowe Police Station, described the incident as "horrible".

Sinran Kaur, who has lived in Strelley Road for the past three years, told Nottinghamshire Live: "It was quite scary.

"It was a massive bang. There was a big bang and we saw it had crashed into the metal fence. It was horrible."

They said it was lucky no one was hurt.

Another resident, Anitah Alvares, who works as a nurse, said: "I was asleep and I heard a massive bang.

"There was a car upside down and about five or six police cars, as well as a fire engine and an ambulance.

"I went to work without any sleep.

"It was a shock. I thought someone was dead the way the car was. That junction is an accident spot."

Pictures from the scene showed a police car perched on its front bumper and standing almost upright against a lamp post.

Metal railings, which were damaged during the incident, have also been removed.

The lamp post has since been taken down and the damaged area remains fenced-off.

Speaking of the incident a force spokeswoman said: "There was a minor collision between a car being driven by a member of the public and a police car as it was on blue lights responding to an emergency call at 2am.

"Evasive action was taken by officers to avoid a significant collision with the other car as it crossed into its path which resulted in the response car hitting street furniture and causing significant damage to the vehicle.

"No one was seriously injured."
