Residents hear ‘big bang’ as tumble dryer sparks Perth flat inferno

Residents on a Perth street were shaken by a “big bang” when a tumble dryer caught fire and turned a flat into an inferno.

Emergency services rushed to the top-floor property on Rannoch Road just before 11pm on Wednesday with the blaze seen raging from one of the windows.

Three fire appliances attended as the occupants of six flats evacuated the building.

Police units were also at the scene and closed the road between Campsie Road and Newhouse Road junctions while firefighters attempted to make the area safe for around three hours.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson told the PA yesterday: “We were alerted at 10.40pm on Wednesday, July 27 to reports of a fire at a property at Rannoch Road, Perth.

“Operations control mobilised three fire appliances and one height vehicle and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting a flat on the top floor of a three-storey tenement building.

“The inhabitants of all six flats were evacuated before the fire appliances arrived and nobody suffered any injuries.”

Officers reopened the road at around 1.30am.

Street resident Stephen Gilruth said: “To start off with there was a fire alarm going off at around about 9.35pm and it stopped for about a few minutes and it started again.

“Then we heard shouting. I was sitting outside with my neighbours at the time so we all had a look to see what was going on and then we saw that there was smoke coming out the window.

“[We heard] the boy shout ‘it’s poison, it’s carbon dioxide’ and then we saw it ignite and burst into flames.

“Then all of a sudden it was a big bang which shattered the windows.

“I called the fire service and four fire engines came and put it out. There was a full street of people who were out recording it and watching.”
