A Tokyo public hall is offering a free service that allows local residents to play a grand piano at its main hall amid the cancellation of events and concerts due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 1,477-seat main hall at civic hall Aprico in Ota Ward had been mostly booked with classical concerts as well as municipal and corporate events, but most of them were canceled in the wake of the infection outbreak.

However, after the Ota City Cultural Promotion Association, which manages the hall, invited 24 groups of residents to play the piano -- usually reserved for concerts -- on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, it was soon fully booked.

Each group enjoyed playing the piano for an hour on Monday. Akari Arai, a first-year junior high school student, said it was the first time that she played a piano at such a large hall. "The sound of the piano was very beautiful as it echoed throughout the hall," she said.

The association plans to continuously organize similar events.
