Residents fill pillowcases with sand in desperate attempt to keep out floodwater as heavy rain hits the valleys

Pictures have captured the shocking scenes in a Welsh village that was severely hit by flash flooding on Wednesday night.

Several homes in Pentre, near Treorchy, have been badly affected by the torrential rain, only four months after it was devastated by Storm Dennis.

One of the streets worst hit then - Price Street - seems to have suffered most again, with one eye-witness saying that the water was “coming up through the manholes”.

Pictures captured earlier on Wednesday show villagers doing everything they can to avoid a repeat of the damage they endured in February when Storm Dennis hit.

People were out in the streets before Wednesday night's heavy rain, taking heed of the warning for flash floods.

Villagers could be seen clearing drains and putting sandbags outside front doors of properties in a desperate attempt to protect their homes.

Firefighters were also in attendance on Wednesday afternoon, preparing for what was to come.

However, despite their best efforts, parts of Pentre were, once again, badly hit.

Pictures from the scene show water levels rising outside homes, almost reaching the windows of one property.

Whole roads have been submerged and some cars will have inevitably been damaged as the level of rain quickly rose above the wheels of some vehicles.

Other areas of the Rhondda have also been affected by the heavy rain on Wednesday, including Maerdy and Treherbert.

Plaid Cymru MS Leanne Wood has called for an “urgent enquiry” into how people in certain area of the Rhondda have been flooded again in such a short space of time, and said her thoughts are with everyone affected by the “heartbreaking scenes”.

Addressing the Welsh Government Environment and Rural Affairs account on Twitter, Ms Wood said: “How is this happening 4 months after the last flood? We need an urgent enquiry into this now. It’s not acceptable for people to go through this time and time again.”

Local resident Sion Tomos Owen said he witnessed about an hour of thunder and lightning before the heavy rain started at around 6pm.

“These families and homes still haven’t recovered from Storm Dennis and are still in lockdown, in other family members homes, because of it.

“How can this happen after only 45 mins of heavy rain? It’s coming up through the manholes.”

Rhondda MP Chris Bryant admitted that he doesn't know how much more the people affected can take.

"The Rhondda has been badly flooded today again," he said.

"Many families who have only just got their houses back together again have been hit. I’m meant to be in parliament tomorrow, but I’ll be heading home as soon as I can to see how I can help.

"We are a resilient community but I don’t know how we can take much more of this without real support from government."
