Residents fed up of nightmare noisy pothole causing them 'sleepless nights'...literally

Residents in south Manchester say they have 'had enough' of a pothole in the middle of the road that is causing them stress and countless sleepless nights.

They say the pothole on Birch Lane in Longsight is now so deep that it causes vehicles to bounce and their tyres to make a 'thumping' sound as they pass through.

The road is often used as a shortcut to the A6 motorway and residents say it attracts heavy traffic from large lorries, trucks and buses.

One resident, who does not wish to be named, said the 'thumping' of cars passing by was so constant that it's now impacting their sleep.

"It's literally all night and all day long," they tell the Manchester Evening News.

"There's cars passing through at all times so when it's bad, it keeps me up at night sometimes.

"I work from home so it's just a constant nightmare for me. I must have contacted the Council on numerous occasions about it now, and I know others have too."

The resident, who has lived on the lane for a couple of years, said it had been an issue ever since they moved in.

"The Council have come to repair it a few times, but it's not been very effective as it's still here.

"There's even a white arrow on the pavement to point workers to where the repairs need to place. That's been there for as long as I can remember."

Manchester Council has now responded to say they are looking into the matter.

Executive Member for the Environment, Planning and Transport, Councillor Angeliki Stogia, said: "The situation at Birch Lane is being investigated and the defect will be repaired as soon as possible.

"We have been carrying out a series of pothole repairs in this area, to improve the standard of local roads.

"Where repair works have not been successful, we have the power to ask the contractors involved to return to the site to rectify the situation, at their own expense.

"I'd urge residents to contact us via www.manchester.gov.uk/highways if they want to report a pothole, or have concerns about any road repair work which has been carried out in their neighbourhood."
