Residents feared 'explosion' after Perthshire hit by 20th earthquake in just over two months

An area in Perthshire has been hit by another earthquake – its 20th in just over two months.

The 2.0magnitude tremor was the biggest so far in the sequence and was recorded by the British Geological Survey (BGS) at 3.22am on Friday, causing residents to believe there had been an “explosion”.

It was said to have been felt by numerous residents in Blackford, Auchterarder, Aberuthven, Braco, Gleneagles, Glendevon and Greenloaning.

The BGS said that people felt their “whole house shook”, “windows and doors rattled” and that it “sounded like an explosion”.

The epicentre was near Gleneagles Golf Course.

It follows a 0.9magitude quake on November 21 and two tremors within six minutes of each other four days earlier, measuring 0.7 and 0.9magnitude.

Another 0.7magnitude quake was recorded on November 11.

Earthquakes can come in clusters. An earthquake swarm is a sequence of seismic events occurring in a local area within a relatively short period of time.

The sequence of quakes in Perthsire goes back to September 2 when a 1.3magnitude quake was felt by several residents.

Scotland has been battered by more than 4000 earthquakes in the past 50 years but few have had an impact on residents.
